Fulham’s greatest ever goalscorer, Gordon Davies, signed from Merthyr Tydfill for £4,000 in March 1978. He flourished under Bobby Campbell demonstrating an outstanding ability to turn his man and, of course, an unerring high for goal. His finishing help Fulham climb from the Third Division to brink of the top flight as well as earning ‘Ivor’ sixteen senior caps for Wales. Davies joined Chelsea after a contractual dispute with the Cottagers in November 1984 but made just fifteen appearances at Stamford Bridge before returning to Manchester City, where he had failed to make the grade as a youngster.
Ray Lewington brought the popular striker back to Craven Cottage in October 1986. He might have lost some of his sharpness and certainly suffered from dreadful luck with injuries but famously broke Fulham’s goalscoring record at Wolves in February 1989. He left to return to Wales and Wrexham in 1991, helping his new side pull off a massive shock when they knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup in January 1992.
Davies ran a successful pest control company after hanging up his boots and has retained a special bond with the Fulham fanbase as well as being an excellent matchday hospitality host at Craven Cottage.
