Fulham-born midfielder Robert Wilson joined the club as an apprentice in 1977. He began his career as a full back but became an attack-minded midfielder with an eye for goal. Bobby Campbell gave Wilson his debut in a FA Cup tie at Blackburn in January 1980 and the youngster soon became a regular in the side, making 43 appearances in 1981/82 as the Whites finished second in Division Three and were unlucky to lose at Tottenham in the fourth round of the League Cup.
Wilson was outstanding as Fulham came so close to making the top flight the following season, scoring eleven goals in a productive campaign, and continued to find the net with regularity until he was sold to Millwall for £57,000 to ease the club’s financial concerns in August 1985. He was reunited with Ray Harford at Luton before Lewington brought him back to Craven Cottage in 1987. A popular player and remarkably modest given his outstanding career, Wilson still travels the length and breadth of the country to watch the Whites with his family today.
