Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper Gerry Peyton swiftly became a fans’ favourite at Craven Cottage having signed for Fulham from Burnley for £35,000 in December 1976. He made 395 appearances for the Whites, missing only three matches between January 1977 and October 1980. He was briefly replaced by Jim Stannard after suffering a serious injury in January 1981 but regained his place as Fulham were promoted from the Third Division the following season. He left Fulham for Bournemouth, where he became a mainstay in the Cherries’ goal, in the summer of 1986 but returned to the club as goalkeeping coach under Jean Tigana in 2001. He went on to work for Arsene Wenger at Arsenal two years later and has recently been managing in Japan.
