Brave goalkeeper Peter Mellor joined Fulham in February 1972 after falling out of the first team at Turf Moor. He immediately became the first-choice keeper and helped keep the Whites in the Second Division with fine performances towards the end of the season. Mellor was magnificent as Fulham made it all the way to the FA Cup final in 1975, producing a man of the match display at Carlisle United in the quarter final, but was at fault for the two goals from West Ham’s Alan Taylor at Wembley.
He also picked up a losers’ medal when Fulham lost to Middlesbrough in the Anglo-Scottish Cup final in the same year, but his relationship with Bobby Campbell deteriorated after he was blamed for a 5-1 defeat against Notts County in November 1976. Mellor was taken off injured and never played for the first team again, joining Hereford United in 1977. He won promotion with Portsmouth before moving to Canada and, after ending his playing career, coached in Florida and for the American men’s national team.
