FA Cup hero John Mitchell signed for Fulham from his local club St. Albans City for £3,000 in February 1972. He made his debut in September 1972 in a draw with Huddersfield Town and went on to score 60 goals in 194 appearances. Mitchell scored eleven times in his first full season with the Whites, but struggled to recapture that form due to a series of niggling injuries. He famously scored in both Cup semi-final fixtures against Birmingham City, with a brilliant strike at Hillsborough followed by a scrappier winner at Maine Road in the last minute to send Alec Stock’s side to Wembley. He scored 22 goals in a superb 1977-78 campaign benefiting from a brilliant partnership with Teddy Maybank – but was sold to Millwall for £100,000 at the end of the season.
