Fan favourite Les Barrett, who is third on the club’s all-time appearance list, had a whirlwind start to his Craven Cottage career, having been introduced into the first team at the start of the ‘Great Escape’ as the Whites wonderfully avoided relegation from the First Division under Vic Buckingham in 1966. The wily winger stayed loyal to the club as they fell from the top tier to the Third Division, but Barrett scored fifteen league goals as Bill Dodgin’s side won promotion in 1970/71. He was an ever-present in Fulham’s run to the FA Cup final in 1975, scoring the winner in the quarter-final triumph at Carlisle United, and also reached two League Cup semi-finals. He left Fulham after twelve years to join Millwall in October 1977 and for many years ran a market garden in Earlsfield.
