Fulham goalkeeping great Tony Macedo joined the Whites as a youth team player in the summer of 1955 and made his senior debut in a 5-0 win at Bristol City in December 1957. He was excellent at claiming crosses, a strong shot stropper and a distributor ahead of his time. Macedo missed only five games as the Whites won promotion back to the top flight in 1958-59 and was outstanding as they finished tenth the following year. He remained first choice until 1966, starring in the club’s 1958 and 1966 FA Cup runs.
He was unfortunate to suffer injuries following a fabulous 1966/1967 campaign and eventually moved to Colchester United in September 1968 after making 391 first-team appearances for Fulham. Macedo finished his career in South Africa and still lives in Johannesburg. He was widely considered the finest goalkeeper never to win a full cap for England.
