Robin Lawler took four years after moving to Fulham from Belfast Celtic in 1949 to establish himself in the first team but became a consistent left back who made 299 first-team appearances in twelve years with the club. Known for his long throw, Lawler was defensively diligent, an excellent reader of the game and a tough tackler. He played in Fulham’s run to the FA Cup semi-finals in 1958 and helped the Whites win promotion to the top flight the following year. He put club before country, otherwise he would have won more than eight international caps for the Republic of Ireland.
