Welsh winger Syd Thomas so impressed Fulham manager Jack Peart that he signed a professional contract during half-time of a trial game in 1938. He had to wait six years for his debut after the outbreak of the Second World War, during which he served as a driver in the RAF, and shone during the 1948/49 promotion season. Thomas struggled to re-establish himself after the arrival of Arthur Rowley, with Arthur Stevens switched to the wing, to accommodate the club’s new signing. He moved to Bristol City in 1950 but had to retire after contracting tuberculosis.
