Centre back Bernard Joy made his only appearance for Fulham as an amateur in the final game of the 1933/34 season – a 2-1 defeat at home to Oldham Athletic. He was capped by England – the last amateur to win a full cap at international level – and went to play for Arsenal before becoming a journalist after the Second World War. He was the Evening Standard’s senior football correspondent, wrote an authoritative history of Arsenal and was a regular contributor to the Fulham matchday programme throughout the 1970s.
