Ramsbottom-born goalkeeper Alf Tootill made more than 200 appearances for Fulham between 1932 and 1938 having left Wolverhampton Wanderers in a cut-price move to Craven Cottage. He immediately usurped Jake Iceton as Fulham’s number one and missed only four fixtures in an exceptional run between March 1933 and 1937. Tootill was Fulham’s number one as they made it all the way to the FA Cup semi-final in 1936, where they were beaten by Sheffield United at his old stomping ground of Molineux. Having been replaced in goal by Hugh Turner, Tootill moved to Crystal Palace, where his career ended prematurely due to the outbreak of the Second World War.
