Classy centre forward Frank ‘Bonzo’ Newton scored an incredible 81 goals in 88 games during two superb spells at Craven Cottage between 1931 and 1935. In his first season at Fulham, Newton scored a stunning 47 goals in 44 appearances as the Whites won the Third Division South. He scored four hat-tricks that year against Exeter City, Coventry City, Luton Town and Yeovil Town and scored his fiftieth Fulham goal just three games into the following season. Newton hit 27 goals in 31 games as Fulham finished third in the Second Division before being controversially sold to Reading.
He returned to Craven Cottage in October 1934 but, after scoring five times in nine games, he suffered a career-ending broken leg in a friendly against FK Austria Wien. Newton moved back to Greater Manchester after his enforced retirement, managing a steelworks in Stockport and died, aged 75, in 1977. The Fulham fans lucky enough to have seen him play rated Newton as one of the deadliest finishers ever to play for the club.
