Formidable forward Jim Hammond hit 151 goals in 342 appearances over ten years at Fulham between 1928 and 1938. He was strong in the air and on the ground and had a powerful shot that was feared throughout England. Signed from Lewes, the fleet-footed youngster enjoyed a dream start at Craven Cottage – scoring five goals in his first six first-team outings. He managed eighteen in 36 games the following season and found the net 33 times as the Whites won the Third Division South title in 1931/32. Hammond scored four goals in a game twice – once against Torquay in September 1931 and again as Fulham beat Sheffield United 7-2. He scored seven hat-tricks for the club and was a mainstay of the side that reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1936.

Hammond, who was called up to the England squad for a friendly against Austria in December 1932, never won a full international cap. He was a talented cricket, frequently missing the beginning and end of the football season, to play for Sussex as an all-rounder. He scored more than 4,000 runs and took 428 wickets for his home county. Hammond died only a week after his revered Fulham strike partner Ronnie Rooke in 1985.
