Striker Barney Travers had scored 29 goals in 49 games for Fulham when he was banned by the Football Association in March 1922 for his part in a match-fixing scandal widely believed to been the brainchild of manager Phil Kelso. He attempted a comeback in Spain but was swiftly exposed and worked only as a coach on the continent subsequently.
