A composed full-back, Alec Chaplin was a regular fixture in one of the most miserly defences in the Second Division for five years after World War One. He missed only eight games between his debut in August 1919 and March 1924. He captained the Whites for much of that time – leading them successfully in a seemingly annual battle against relegation – and starred in Fulham’s run to the FA Cup quarter finals in March 1926. He became player-coach of Northfleet in 1926 but served as a Labour councillor on Fulham Council between 1944 and 1959. He watched the Whites until his death aged 94 in March 1986.
