Centre back George Parsonage scored three times in 23 games during a successful 1908/09 season before being banned by the Football Association after requesting a £50 signing on fee when negotiating a move to Chesterfield (the FA limit for such a payment then was £10). He claimed he was joking, but Chesterfield reported his request to the FA – and Parsonage was banned for eighteen months.
