Henry Shrimpton was a key figure in the early years of Fulham Football Club, playing for the Whites for five years between 1893 and 1898 alongside his brothers Tom, Jim and Jack. The youngest of the four brothers quickly made the left back spot his own as a remarkably rapid defender and a terrific tackler.
Shrimpton captained Fulham in their first game at Craven Cottage – the famous 4-0 win over Minerva in October 1896 and played alongside his brothers in a 4-1 defeat against Tottenham’s reserves in February 1896, setting a record that will stand forever. He ended his playing career at the Cottage in 1898 but served on the club’s committee for a number of years after that and wrote The Foundation History of Fulham Football Club in 1950, an authoritative text on the club’s early years.
Shrimpton died aged 81 in Orpington but the family’s history with the club continued with his grandson David, who was on the Fulham board through the nineties until Mohamed Al-Fayed’s takeover.
