Expert penalty saver Johnny May joined Fulham aged 19 in 1886. He helped the Whites win the West London Association Cup the following year and became club captain in 1889, leading the club to the inaugural West London League title as they completed the campaign unbeaten. May was a magnificent stopper of penalties and was beaten for the only team in an 8-0 thrashing by Stanley in 1896. Secretary Horace Watkins was so enraged by May’s poor display in that game that he released him from the club completely – a harsh ending for one of the Whites’ early heroes.
