Fulham’s number two goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte savoured ‘a nice feeling’ after saving three Wycombe Wanderers penalties to spare the Premier League side’s blushes in the League Cup at Adams Park last night – but insisted the credit for his shoot-out heroics should be served by all of the club’s coaching staff.

The French custodian made crucial saves from Ewan Henderson, Fred Onyedinma and Donell McNeilly to help Marco Sillva’s side scrape through a tricky tie 6-5 on penalties. The League 1 outfit took the lead in the fourth minute through a fine finish from former Fulham forward Cauley Woodrow and, although Josh King scored a superb first senior goal for the club, the visitors couldn’t capitalise on a period of late pressure.

Speaking to FFCTV after the final whistle, Lecomte said:

“It’s a really nice feeling for me – but also for the team after what [form] we’ve had in [the] Premier League. I think this can help us to have a better feeling, a positive feeling, for the next game we receive at home. It’s always difficult when you go away because they want to kill you. For them, it is a big competition – like it is for us too. We started in a bad way, but I think we have to tell them [Wycombe Wanderers] that they played a really good game. I’m happy because we pushed a lot and it can be good for our brain … it can be good for [when we play again] in the [Premier League].”

He added that there was no panic in the dressing room at half-time despite the Whites being behind on the scoreboard.

We just had to calm, to be honest, because we had 45 minutes to go – even more with the additional time. So, [Marco Silva said] just to be patient, be smart, be clever and I think this is what we did, we didn’t concede any more goals. I’m really happy that we won and we pass through [into the quarter finals]. It’s always nice to have more minutes in the tanks, so let’s keep pushing and see which team we get in the next round.

The former Lorient, Montpellier and Monaco goalkeeper played down his heroics in the shoot-out – preferring to praise his team-mates and Fulham’s coaching staff.

“No, there is no secret [to saving penalties]! I think we all did a great job with the goalkeeper’s [coaching] team. For sure, when we win the penalty shoot-out, it is always nice for the goalkeeper, but I have to congratulate the whole team, the whole [coaching] staff, because this was not an easy game, and we did the job tonight.

I wish I could have made the saves in front of our fans, but at the end of the day we won the penalty shoot-out. We have to be really thankful to the fans because they came to help us. I think they helped to push us forward in the second half. We’ll do the same on Saturday at home [in the Premier League against Wolverhampton Wanderers].”
