Harry Wilson feels Fulham ‘can beat anyone’ after he scored his fourth goal in three games against Brentford to win a third successive west London derby.
The Welshman, who caressed home Fulham’s second from a fine Alex Iwobi pass, downplayed his personal contribution when speaking to FFCTV after the final whistle last night:
“Football can be funny at times. You have them teams that you enjoy playing against. Tonight wasn’t about me – it was about getting the second win in a week. Both at home at the Cottage. That was what everyone wanted and that’s what we got.”
Wilson felt Brentford’s opening goal arrived against the run of play – but praised Josh King for not being affected by the mistake that allowed Mikkel Damsgaard to put the visitors in front.
“I thought we were playing well in the game. Obviously a little mistake, but the way Kingy responded from that showed exactly the type of player he is. I think the next time he got the ball, he takes it on the back foot, beats a couple of players and wins a throw. I think that just shows the confidence [he has] and the type of player he is. We just all wanted to make sure that he didn’t overthink that, he got back on to his game and it was us to respond and to get the two quick goals was amazing.”
Wilson believes the Whites are a match for any side when they are at their best:
“When we get it right and we click, I think we can beat anyone. That second goal especially showed that when we’re at it, when we’re playing with tempo, we can cut through any team. When teams come and play with a back five or play a bit defensive, it can be difficult and you need individuals or moments, but I think that was a really good team goal.”
He felt Fulham’s hard work on defending set plays all week had paid off too.
“We worked a lot on that this week because we knew that they had scored from long throws and set pieces in the last couple of games. I think we dealt with them really well. The two centre halves, Sander dropping back in there, Kenny as well and then it was up to us boys to pick up the second balls and make sure they weren’t recycling balls into our box. I felt as a team all night we defended set plays well.”
