Brighton and Hove Albion have confirmed that a 72 year-old male home supporter has passed away after requiring medical treatment during the second half of their 1-1 draw with Fulham at the AMEX Stadium this afternoon.

An Albion statement detailed that the supporter was attended to by medical staff and club employees in the East Stand Upper but could not be saved. Paul Barber, Brighton’s CEO and deputy chairman, said:

“This was an incredibly sad end to the match this afternoon, and our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family and friends of the gentleman who lost his life. While the gentleman concerned is foremost in our minds, we are also aware that it was an emotional and distressing situation for staff and supporters in the direct vicinity. Over the coming days we will ensure those affected are properly supported.”

Albion’s safety team, the Sussex Police and the Premier League considered stopping the match but it was felt than any pause in the action might have hindered the resuscitation efforts. We would like to convey our sympathy to the friends and family of the supporter who sadly lost their life as well as everybody at Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club following their tragic news.
