Samuel Barrott, the referee who awarded the stoppage-time penalty that saw Brighton and Hove Albion beat Fulham in March, will take charge of the Premier League opener between the two teams at the AMEX on Saturday.
Barrott, who began refereeing aged fifteen when he got injured playing for Halifax Town’s youth side, was promoted to the Select Group at the start of the 2023/2024 season. His first top flight game was at Craven Cottage when Fulham beat Sheffield United in October 2023. He officiated the League One play-off final between Bolton Wanderers and Oxford United in 2024 and was promoted to the Select Group for the 2024/2025 campaign.
Barrott, who was promoted to the FIFA international list in December 2024, will be assisted by Tim Wood and Wade Smith on Saturday. The Video Assistant Referee will be Matt Donohue and the assistant VAR will be Dan Robathan.
A sly bit of psychological warfare for the opening game: bring it, Brighton! We don’t need dodgy refs to win against you! COYW!
