Fulham have completed the signing of Sunderland midfielder Lee Clark for £3m.
The former England under-21 midfielder, who has won promotion from the First Division with Newcastle United and Sunderland, was made available for transfer by manager Peter Reid after wearing a t-shirt to the FA Cup final emblazoned with the slogan ‘Sad Mackem Bastards’. Clark, who 85 appearances and scored sixteen goals for the Black Cats, has signed a three-year deal at Craven Cottage to be reunited with his former Sunderland team-mate Paul Bracewell at Craven Cottage.
Bracewell, who has taken over from Kevin Keegan as Fulham’s manager, couldn’t hide his delight at securing his second signing of the summer.
“£3m is a lot of money but he’s a quality player – someone I know all about. Lee’s done it at the highest level. He helped take Sunderland back into the Premiership.”
Clark has turned down a number of top flight clubs and concerted interest from Celtic to sign for Fulham – having met Mohamed Al-Fayed and Bracewell last week and been inspired by their ambition to take the club back into the top tier of English football for the first time in more than three decades.
