Former Fulham midfielder Lee Clark has returned to Newcastle United on a short-term contract this afternoon.
The 32 year-old starts his second spell at St. James’ Park after impressing the Magpies coaching whilst training with the first-team squad to keep his fitness up following Fulham’s decision not to extend his contract at the end of last season. Clark, who made 195 appearances for his boyhood club in six years from 1991 to 1997, has not been registered in time to feature in Newcastle’s Intertoto Cup semi-final second leg against RC Deportivo La Coruña tomorrow night.
The all-action midfielder made 178 appearances, scoring 22 goals, in a six-year spell at Craven Cottage that saw the Whites win the First Division title under Jean Tigana and establish themselves as a Premier League side. The 32 year-old was bitterly disappointed that his former team-mate Chris Coleman elected to release him alongside Barry Hayles in May.
