The Guardian has a fascinating write up of the arrest of Bobby Moore ahead of the 1970 World Cup on suspicion of stealing a bracelet from a Bogota jewellery store and the furore that followed.
The intervention of the government and the international football community is covered in detail as well as the insistence of the shop assistant who accused Moore of the theft that she didn’t lie. Fulham fans were fortunate enough to enjoy Moore’s presence at the heart of their defence in the twilight of his career – but he had, of course, already enjoyed immortality by leading England to victory in the 1966 World Cup.
The story is well worth a read.
