Fulham have turned down Atletico Madrid’s £21.5m offer for for Nigerian international Alex Iwobi.
The Whites view their 29 year-old midfielder as a key part of Marco Silva’s plans and are not considering selling him at this point. Atletico’s bid – disclosed by AfricaFoot – came as a surprise to both Fulham and Iwobi, whose consistent displays for the Cottagers saw him become a target of Diego Simeone’s as Atleti aim to revamp their squad following their disappointing third-place finish in La Liga last season.
The former Arsenal and Everton midfielder was reportedly offered a weekly wage of around £115,000-a-week by Los Colchoneros and it remains to be seen whether they will increase their bid in the coming days. Iwobi, who signed for Fulham in a £22m deal from Everton in September 2023, has quickly become a fans’ favourite at Craven Cottage for his industrious displays in a number of different positions.
The Nigerian has scored 15 goals and made eight assists in 77 games and still has three years to run on his current contract. Iwobi has scored ten goals in eighty senior appearances for the Super Eagles, whom he helped reach the final of the African Cup of Nations last February.
Don’t sell at any cost
Put a 50 million fee on his head then it might be wort considering.Perhaps they might like ESR instead. We want players in not out
He must be kept !!
We don’t want to sell we need to buy
Considering his value to Fulham, that offer would have to be at least 35m for Fulham to even consider it.
Zero sense selling arguably our best player for peanuts!
Nothing surprises you in football nowadays. This sounds unlikely but if someone has had a word in his ear that Atletico are interested then that might end up being problematic to us considering their status and what they offer?
Wouldn’t want lose him, a great member of the squad.
I wouldn’t be too disappointed if he went. Seems to blow hot and cold. We play him wide and never takes the full back on, prefering to go sideways. Good squad player but if we want to progress we need someone more direct. He’s 29 and we are always saying the squad is too old, let him go and use the transfer money and 80k wages to buy someone younger…..or give Josh King a chance
The reality for us is that when certain clubs come in for one of our players, you know that we won’t have a hope of hanging on to them, and unfortunately AM are in that bracket.
He’s 29, so if a bid comes in it will probably be the best offer we’d ever get for him. If that’s the case then all we can really do is take as much money off them as possible.
The first offer is derisory for a player who had a great season last time, although he looked tired for the latter third or so. He’s easily worth another 10m on top of that, not least because he put away 9 last season, plus he’s a very versatile player.
As a player nearing the last few years of his career, I could see why he might want to go and grab a last big payday, and couldn’t begrudge him that.
I’d like to think he’d stay but, in all honesty if the choice for Alex is to play for a mid table Prem club or one of the top sides in Spain, then I think we have to be realistic.
If he goes, then I hope we already have someone in the frame as a potential replacement.
