Captain Tom Cairney is still in talks with Fulham about his continuing his Craven Cottage career beyond this summer

The 34 year-old midfielder started the Whites’ final game of the season – a 2-0 home defeat against Manchester City – and was serenaded afterwards by the Hammersmith End, who demanded that he be given ‘one more year’ after a decade of superb service. While Marco Silva suggested to Talksport after the final whistle that the skipper might be on his way, Cairney told Fulham’s official website that talks were continuing between the club and his representatives.

“We’ll see what happens next week. We’re still in talks, so it’s a weird feeling right now. I don’t know which way to go about it, obviously I want to thank a few people, but at the same time, we’re still in talks.”

The Scottish international insisted that he was proud of Fulham’s progress since being promoted to the Premier League in 2022 at the end of Silva’s first season in charge.

I think some people forget that this is our third season, after being in the Championship. Every year – we’ve built and built and built. We broke our record points tally for the Premier League in Fulham’s history this season, so things have gotten better. We could have got to an FA Cup Semi-Final but obviously lost to the winners in the end, so it is what it is. We’ve had ups and downs but, listen, we’ve built a strong team, a strong squad, and the manager’s done incredible in them three years.”
