Fulham have confirmed that they have appointed Kevin Keegan as their new chief operating officer and Ray Wilkins as the club’s new manager after the sacking of Micky Adams.

Keegan said he was delighted to be back in football eight months after he left Newcastle United and is determined to lead the Cottagers back to the top flight. He said: “I’m very excited about what is going to happen here. Mohamed Al-Fayed shares a lot of views I have about football. What we have got to do here at Fulham is start with a blank piece of paper. Our aim and our wish is to make Fulham one of the big clubs. Our aim is the Premiership.

I’ve already seen some articles in the paper where people laugh and people joke and I fully understand them, but we have the chance to make people eat their words. The intention is to be as successful here as I was at Newcastle. This new job role excites me and I can’t wait to get on with the job. It was always going to take something special for me to come back into football – and this is special”.

Wilkins’ first match in charge will be Saturday’s trip to Wigan Athletic. Fulham have confirmed that Arthur Cox will become the club’s new chief scout, reprising a role he carried out for Keegan at St. James’ Park until January.
