Goals from Dejan Tetek and Christian Maghoma saw Aldershot Town knock Fulham’s under 21s out of the National League Cup this evening.
Hayden Mullins’ youngsters needed to beat the Shots to stand a chance of qualifying for the inaugural knockout stage of the competition but they had only a late consolation goal from the in-form Aaron Loupalo-Bi to show for their efforts on a disappointing night at the Recreation Ground.
The home side dominated the first period with Ryan Jones wasting a glorious opportunity when he skewed a shot horribly high and wide of the target. Fulham threatened only sporadically with winger Terrell Works seeing an effort deflected wide, but they were mostly penned back in their half by the National League outfit. Eddy Nsasi bravely blocked a drive from Maxwell Mullins from a cross by Aaron Jones but that reprieve proved merely temporary.
The hosts went in front on the twenty minute mark when Ryan Jones found space out wide to set up Tetek, whose strike on goal was deflected past Alex Borto by the unfortunate Samuel Amissah. The opening goal only served to galvanise the Shots with Borto brilliant saving a powerful header from Mullins when Fulham’s marking was all at sea from a corner a couple of minutes later. Amissah then did superbly to block a shot from Aaron Jones before the winger ruffled the side netting with another effort before the break.
The pattern continued after the interval with Nsasi nodding away a shot from Cameron Hargreaves underneath his own crossbar. Aldershot grabbed a crucial second goal when Fulham were found wanting from another set piece and centre half Maghoma headed home from a corner on the hour mark.
Substitute Callum Osmand missed a great chance to bring the Whites back into it when he somehow shot wide from six yards out after being set up by clever play from Loupalo-Bi. Loupalo-Bi did give Fulham feint hope of a comeback when he rounded Aldershot goalkeeper Jordi van Stappershoef and scored with six minutes to go, but the young Whites were not able to force an equaliser in the time that remained.

This are good youngsters that are doing well, put prove its a big jump from men’s football to youth football let alone the premiership. Most youth teams struggle in these games but it’s a good experience. And shows the fans who moan that Fulham don’t put enough youth in first team. Marco has to be very careful we don’t do that bad, and loans are very useful at the right time
