Fulham forward Raul Jimenez enjoyed a dream return to national team duty as he scored a superb free kick to help Mexico record a first victory over the United States in seven matches in Zapopan last night.

Jimenez, who has scored three Premier League goals and produced an outstanding assist for Andreas Pereira since replacing Rodrigo Muniz in Marco Silva’s starting line-up last month, marked his return to the Mexican side with his 34th international goal midway through the first half. His long-range curler gave Matt Turner no chance and he then embarrassed former Fulham team-mate Tim Ream to set up César Huerta’s second goal in a dominant virtuoso display.
