Fulham have completed a season-long loan deal to bring in Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson following the successful submission of a deal sheet.
The 24 year-old pulled out of his move to tomorrow’s opponents Ipswich Town in order to sign for the Whites, according to the Athletic. Nelson has made 90 appearances for the Gunners, scoring eight goals, but was keen to play first-team football after falling down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta last season.
The former England under-21 international came through the Hale End academy alongside his new Fulham team-mates Alex Iwobi and Emile Smith Rowe. He enjoyed successful loan spells at Feyenoord and Hoffenheim before helping Arsenal win the FA Cup in 2020.
Hate loan signings but he does look to have the quality to make an impact.
Certainly a better option than playing Iwobi wide left.
I am guessing he won’t start at Ipswich which means that, yet again, Iwobi will play out of position.
Fully expect Andersen to start and, hopefully, be captain.
Not sure if Berge is considered fully match fit.
Once Nelson starts, we will have SEVEN midfielders fighting for just THREE spots. Interesting, to say the least.
Whichever trio start today, they will be too good for Ipswich. Luongo and Morsy, IMO, are not Premiership quality.
My only concern is upfront. I really hope that Muniz has his shooting boots on because, having let the one player with a real eye for goal, join Birmingham, we don’t have many options.
Something else worth considering:
On paper, we have pushed the boat out re new signings and, IMO, we have made some astute purchases that can only improve the team.
Andersen, Berge and Smith-Rowe are all quality players. Nelson, also, is, hopefully, a quality loan signing. From the little I have seen of him, Cuenca is one for the future but it’s hard to see where he slots in unless Bassey is injured. Sessegnon is more of an emotional signing and, again, it’s hard to see how he gets game time unless Robinson is injured.
Yet, for all that, our net expenditure is just 15m. Hardly a fortune. If you check out the comings and goings of other Premiership clubs, similar to Fulham’s standard, their net expenditure is 4 or 5 times greater.
Prudent fiscal management or tight fisted???
We didn’t HAVE to sell Jay Stansfield, is what I am trying to say.
Charles, I think you need to chill out. We have made astute signings, replacing players who’ve left. We cant always have it our own way, sadly this is not football manager where you wave your magic wand, over spend and get your dream team. We have replaced players who’ve left and arguably strengthened those positions. Obviously it would have been great to sign Nelson permanently, but again, as said above, this isnt football manager and theres more at play here. Marco is slowly but surely lowering our average squad age whilst signing better players. What more could you want Charles?? COYW
IMO A very smart window. With his physicality, his pressing and hold up play, Muniz contributes even if he’s not scoring (hope he gets started today). All really good signings. The club’s in a good position now, with quality, younger players with Premier league experience looking to establish themselves as regular starters and develop as players. Even though Nelson is on loan, he looks quality with scope to grow, and remember, signing Willian (worth much more quality and experience) on a one year contract was essentially a loan, with no guarantee he would sign again at the end of the season. I think we’ve got plenty of goals in our midfield so we don’t need to completely rely on any CF. Love what Marco and the club are doing. COYW!
Charles has a glass that is always half empty. Much prefer to have Nelson starting than Stansfield. If you take the emotion out of the situation, “he’s one of our own” and look at it this way. Stansfield was the 22nd best goalscorer in the Championship last season and now you think he will be some kind of messiah in the hardest league in the world. Would have been better to have spent money on a permanent signing of Nelson.
Agree with you CB. If the figures are correct we’ve actually done ok with selling a young academy player for a change. This is exactly what people wanted. jay will be good, but I’m not sure he’ll be an Elliot or even a carvalho to be honest
Anyone who complains about this window needs to give themselves an uppercut.
I fully agree with Freddie and Pete football is also a business and happy FFC have the awareness to put out a quarter the amount of some clubs and get players of the same quality and in some cases even better quality. Give it some thought CHARLES, COYW from a supporter since the early Sixties.
Best thing about this window is that, apart from Palhinha who was always going to go, we have not sold anyone that we needed to keep hold of i.e. Perreira and Robinson, who had both been linked to other clubs. We have replaced the players we have lost with generally better options, especially Andersen for Tosin and Nelson for Reid and probably Cuenca for Ream. We were never going to match Joao but Smith Rowe and Berge are brilliant signings.
I’m sorry Charles but perhaps you are supporting the wrong team in Fulham. C*****a have spent tons of money, if that is your sole criterion for a succesful window!
Very smart transfer window with the exception of Anderson for Tosin (1 year difference) we have replaced the players who have left with players who are considerably younger so reducing our average age. Also the players who have come in are better quality and we actually sold Mbabu. There is still time to sell Vicinius as some countries are still open to sell to and then it would be the perfect window IMO. Carlos still does not have a squad number.
Interesting set of comments which on the whole l agree with. Yes it has been a good window for us and net outlay is minimal. And average age of squad lowered which is a bonus along with better quality players. Down side was selling Jay but all in all very happy. We should consider playing our other young strikers and not vinni who has served us well but should now be allowed to go.
