Former Fulham goalkeeper Tony Macdeo has passed away at the age of 86, the club have confirmed this morning.
Macedo, widely considered the finest goalkeeper of his generation not to win a senior England cap, was born in Gibraltar in February 1938. He joined Fulham as a youth team player in 1955 and made his first-team debut for the Whites in a 5-0 win at Bristol City in December 1957. A brave goalkeeper who excelled at claiming crosses and distributed the ball brilliantly, Macedo missed only matches as Fulham won promotion back to the top flight in 1958/59 and starred as the Whites finished tenth the following season.
He remained as Fulham’s first choice goalkeeper until 1966 and was outstanding as the Cottagers reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1958 and 1962. He never won his place back after suffering injury problems following a fantastic 1966/67 and left for Colchester United in September 1968 having made 391 appearances for Fulham, the eighteenth highest in the club’s history.
Our thoughts are with Tony’s widen Margaret, daughter Donna, son Mark, his grandchildren and many friends at this tremendously sad time. May Tony rest in peace.
First keeper I saw in a Fulham shirt, fond memorys legend RIP
Same here. Remember him wearing a green jersey – and a cap when the sun was low. Don’t think he often wore gloves even with the old leather footballs that were more like medicine balls! Played in goal myself so he was my favourite Fulham player. One of the best keepers in the league at that time as well as being brave and fearless.RIP.
One of my early heroes. An excellent, brave keeper.

My favourite keeper RIP Tony you were a legend.
The original ‘cat’ who gave me some of my greatest boyhood memories at the Cottage and beyond.
Ian Black was the first keeper i saw at the Cottage, reliable but unspectacular.Tony Macedo was spectacular and agile and made back passes, legal then of course, look like spectacular saves. one of my favorite players of all time. RIP
One of FFC’s best keepers. Agile and brave. Back then some mates and I used to watch Fulham train at Ruxley Lane, Ewell. He would get the other players to give us their autographs. Nice Guy. RIP.
I started supporting Fulham in 1973 and my Dad, who played in goal himself, waxed lyrical about just how good a goalkeeper Tony Macedo was.
Clearly loved and respected by those fortunate enough to see have seen him play. That’s a great legacy. RIP Tony.
