Two goals in a minute gave Gillingham’s promotion push a real shot in the arm as they ended Fulham’s recent revival at Priestfield this afternoon.
Dave Shearer gave the Gills the lead from the penalty spot ten minutes before the break, but Ray Lewington’s side looked to have been handed a lifeline when midfielder Leo Donellan levelled just before the hour mark. Gillingham manager Keith Peacock was furious at the award of a contentious throw in to the visitors that led to Fulham’s equaliser, but his anger abated after the hosts scored twice in a minute.
Steve Lovell and Tony Cascarino – whose effort took his tally to 22 for a superb season – beat visiting goalkeeper John Vaughan in the space of sixty seconds before Les Barry added a fourth eleven minutes from time.
