Debutant Bob Colville scored the winner as Bury came from behind to beat a fragile Fulham outfit at Gigg Lane this afternoon.

The Whites looked to put their off-field troubles to one side when they scored with their first shot of the contest as defender Brian Cottington surprisingly surged clear of the home rearguard to score with a low shot midway through the first half.

Bury’s new signing Sammy McIllroy turned the contest with a superb cross that Peter Valentine turned home in the 62nd minute. McIllroy also played a crucial role in the Shakers’ winner two minutes later as the Northern Irish midfielder set up Colville, who hooked a fine finish past Fulham goalkeeper John Vaughan.

FULHAM: Vaughan; Oakes, Hicks, Carr, Cottington (Skinner 75), Elkins, Parker, Kerrins, Donnellan, Davies, Pike.

GOAL: Cottington (23).
