Gary Andrews’ last-minute winner gave Peterborough United victory over Third Division Fulham in this dreary Leyland Daf Cup tie at London Road.
The Posh had the better chances to win this tie long before Andrews’ late moment of magic but Paul Culpin, Paul Richards and substitute Steve Osborne all squandered good chances to make the most of their side’s dominance. Manager Mark Lawrenson rung the changes with Mick Halsall and David Longhurst missing out and goalscoring hero Andrews starting his first game in three months. There was also a run-out for young attacker Adrian Speed, who impressed his boss with an all-action display after coming off the bench at half time.
Lawrenson said afterwards: “I’m delighted with the victory. We worked hard and deserved it. All the lads did well and we brought Speed on. It was a great experience for him and he played very well. It proves that everyone has to work for a place. Look at Carl Richards. He played better than ever today – putting himself about more than I have ever seen today!”
