Ray Lewington received a stark reminder of the poisoned chalice he has inherited at Craven Cottage – as flaky Fulham were well beaten by Cambridge United.
The U’s went in front on the half hour mark when left back Danny Granville looped a lovely shot over Jim Stannard from the edge of the penalty after the home defence had failed to clear a long ball.
Fulham’s best chance of an equaliser fell to Ara Bedrossian, who ran onto a flick on from Sean Farrell but saw his side-footed shot saved by the legs of Cambridge goalkeeper John Filan.
With a quarter of an hour to go, Cambridge made sure of the points. Martin Butler beat Simon Morgan and Mark Blake down the left flank before supplying a low cross for Carlo Corazzin to caress a finish past Jim Stannard from six yards out.
