A spectacular 25-yard strike from substitute Gary Pick denied Fulham their first ever win at Hereford United this afternoon.

The 23 year-old midfielder had been on the field all of four minutes when he latched onto a poor clearance from Terry Angus and leathered home an unstoppable left-footed drive. Pick admitted afterwards: “I put my head down and hit it as hard as I could”.

Fulham had led through Duncan Jupp’s far post header from a half-cleared Micky Adams corner just before half time and would have been disappointed not to claim all three points as they played the better football on a patchy Edgar Street playing surface.

Jim Stannard made several good saves in the first half, but Fulham spurned presentable opportunities that fell to Nick Cusack and Jupp before the Scottish right back’s opening goal. They might have snatched a late winner but Northern Irish striker Rory Hamill curled a shot agonisingly past the far post.

Fulham boss Ian Branfoot said afterwards: “We looked like winners on the day. I was particularly pleased with the second half. If you create that many chances away from home, you are definitely on promotion form”.
