Fulham full back Devan Tanton says his senior debut for Colombia earlier this month ‘came out of the blue’.

The attacking right back was rewarded for his excellent displays in Fulham’s under 21 side over the last couple of campaigns with a first-team appearance as a substitute in the Whites’ 3-1 League Cup win at Ipswich Town, but his elevation to Néstor Lorenzo’s full Colombian squad for two December friendlies in the United States was something of a surprise.

Tanton, speaking after Fulham’s under 21s had beaten Athletic Club in the Premier League International Cup to round off a superb 2023, told FFCTV:

“I hadn’t really expected it. I got the call up sort of out of the blue and then within a few days I was in Colombia and from there we flew to Florida, made my debut against Venezuela and my family were able to go because they all live in Florida. I had a good amount of support there and it was a real special day for me. I haven’t had that luxury, being in England, my parents don’t get to see we play very often. For them to be able to see such a special moment in my career was something that will stay with me for a while.”
