Cliff Carr broke into the Fulham side as an eighteen year-old having come through the youth set-up. He overcame a fear that he would be too short to be a full back by making more than 150 first-team appearances for the Whites and becoming club captain. Carr won an England under-21 cap in 1985 and was a consistent performer despite Fulham finishing bottom of the Second Division in 1985/86 and almost being relegated again the following season with the uncertainty of the club’s future playing out in the press. He joined Stoke City for £45,000 in August 1987.
