Rufus Brevett feels Fulham’s UEFA Cup debut will seem like a dream tonight for his team-mates who began their Craven Cottage adventure in the Second Division only four years ago.
The former Queens Park Rangers full back dropped down a division to join the Whites in February 1998 having been enticed by his old Loftus Road Ray Wilkins at the start of the Mohamed Al-Fayed era. Brevett’s first six games in SW6 included a draw with Grimsby Town and defeats at the hands of Blackpool, Bournemouth and Oldham Athletic.
Fulham’s ascension to the Premier League – a year ahead of Al-Fayed’s five-year plan – was clinched by Jean Tigana’s superb first season in charge and the Cottagers qualified for the UEFA Cup by winning the InterToto Cup on Brevett’s old stomping. The left back told the Daily Telegraph:
“Everyone is excited. It’s the first time the club has qualified for Europe and it means a lot to people. I came here when Fulham were in Division Two and I have to admit the UEFA Cup seemed a million miles away.”
