Combative central midfielder Richard Carpenter was the third in a triumvirate of key figures pilfered from Gillingham in the summer of 1996. He didn’t arrive at Craven Cottage until almost the end of September but quickly made up for lost time, becoming an integral part of Fulham’s Division Three promotion season. Injuries disrupted the remainder of his Fulham career, and he signed for Cardiff City in July 1998, before winning two more promotions under Adams at Brighton and Hove Albion.
