Fulham’s Paul Peschisolido was unable to save Canada from a dismal 3-0 defeat against Japan in the Confederations Cup.
Two goals in the space of three minutes gave the co-hosts a comfortable win in their opening game of the tournament. After a goalless first half, Shinji Ono scored a superb free-kick eleven minutes after half time. Within three minutes, a stretching Akinori Nishizawa touched home Hiroaki Morishima’s cross to give the Japanese some breathing space. Morishima’s impudent chip over Craig Forrest rounded off the scoring.
Canada played well in the first half, generating the better scoring opportunities. Canada’s best chance came in the 30th minute, as David Xausa sent a first time shot at goal that Japanese ‘keeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi parried. Jim Brennan chipped the ball past Kawaguchi in the 34th minute but Jason Bent could not convert the chance, and Jason DeVos saw a good header deflected over the goal late in the first half.
Canada will face Brazil Saturday in Ibaraki in their second Group “B” game – with the match screened live on Channel 5..
