Promising right back Jamie Smith joined Fulham on a short-term loan from Crystal Palace in March 1999 after Kevin Keegan’s side were hit by several defensive injuries. The youngster kept a clean sheet on his debut at Reading and scored against runners-up Walsall, making a positive impression in nine appearances. He returned to Selhurst Park at the end of the season, going on to make more than 150 first-time appearances for the Eagles.
