Luton Town sprung a huge surprise at Craven Cottage this afternoon as goals from Phil Gray, Stuart Douglas and Steve Davis left high-flying Fulham stunned.
The Hatters made a dream start as they took the lead from their first attack in the sixth minute. Sean Evers sprinted onto a raking pass from Matthew Spring to make good progress down the right flank and his chipped cross was emphatically headed home by Phil Gray. Luton’s five-man defence successfully nullified Fulham’s forward line and the visitors were perhaps unfortunate not to have extended their lead before the half-time interval.
Stuart Douglas made it 2-0 three minutes into the second half when he received a forward ball from Gavin McGowan, skipped away from Gus Uhlenbeek and cut it from the left wing before firing an unstoppable shot past Maik Taylor. Davis made sure of the victory midway through the second period when he headed home his fifth goal of the season from Ray McKinnon’s free-kick to render former Hatter Alan Neilson’s late header almost academic.
