The good people at BBC Sport are still persisting with asking my views about Fulham matters in their Thursday football feature. This week’s question – ‘what is the greatest goal you’ve seen your team score?’ – caused me a fair bit of consternation. As people have remarked on watching the Fulham February goal of the month competition, there have been a high quality of strikes from first team representatives in February alone. A decision like this is ultimately subjective and I opted for Pajtim Kasami’s stunning strike at Selhurst Park in 2013.
The quality of that goal doesn’t need reiterating. It was an incredible individual feat that had everybody blinking and wondering if they really had just seen the Swiss midfielder score a world class volley. The context made that moment all the more extraordinary. New owner Shahid Khan was in the stands and celebrated with the away fans after the VIP section at Crystal Palace had been evacuated due to a fire alarm. On the pitch, Fulham had began the televised London derby poorly, conceding an early goal to the home side, who were desperate to deliver for under pressure manager Ian Holloway.
The Whites hadn’t offered much as an attacking force until Kasami’s moment of magic sparked a comeback that saw Martin Jol’s men stroll to a 4-1 victory. Of course, that success proved a false down – it earned Jol a few more months in the Fulham dugout and the Whites eventually went down with a whimper, employing three managers along the way. But as I write in the piece for the Beeb, after paying due deference to Mike Conroy ‘from the halfway line’ at Wycombe, none of that diminished the remarkable nature of Kasami’s astonishing strike.
Totally agree about Kasami goal. But one that never gets mentioned these days was a Brian Dear goal at Blackburn back in the 60’s. He hit a shot from just outside the centre circle probably 40 odd yars and it flew like a bullet into the top of the Blackburn net. Probably only a few of thus that were there will remember that one!
Papa Diop against Utd., ranks up there. Fergie was definitely p***ed off when he scored that goal.
