Amiable Dutch manager Martin Jol enjoyed initial success at Craven Cottage by putting the accent firmly on attack. He guided Fulham to ninth place in his first season in charge, recovering from a group stage exit in the Europa League, by memorably beating Arsenal and Liverpool and thrashing Queens Park Rangers 6-0. Jol’s defensive organisation was always questionable and his side struggled after losing Clint Dempsey and Mousa Dembele in the same summer as he struggled to shoehorn the luxuries of Dimitar Berbatov, Bryan Ruiz and Adel Taraabt in the same eleven. He was sacked on 1 December 2013 after six successive defeats.
