The signing of Matt Targett on loan from Southampton in January proved pivotal to Fulham’s promotion back to the Premier League. The adventurous full back formed a flawless partnership with Ryan Sessegnon down that flank and helped the Whites knit together a 23-match unbeaten run that carried them from mid-table to the brink of automatic promotion. Although Targett ended up vomiting on the pitch at St. Andrew’s as our automatic promotion hopes went up in smoke on the final day at Birmingham, he recovered to play superbly in the play-offs and was another outstanding loanee lost in the aftermath of that Wembley success as Fulham splashed the cash elsewhere. He is now a first-team regular with Newcastle United.
