The ice-cool Icelandic international was a popular member of the Fulham first-team team during his two years at Craven Cottage, particularly as he was a prolific converter of penalty kicks. Helguson, who earned the wrath of Chris Coleman for punching in a goal for Watford against Fulham during Jean Tigana’s Division One title winning season, joined the Whites for just over £1m in June 2005 but was most often used as a substitute at the start of his Craven Cottage career. Paired with Brian McBride, Helguson posed problems for even the league’s most accomplished defences.
In one rich vein of form, he scored seven goals in ten games – including a double against West Brom and strikes against West Ham, Chelsea and Manchester United – but found regular football hard to come by, especially as Coleman persisted with playing a lone striker. He was eventually sold to Bolton Wanderers for £1m in July 2007.
