Fulham appear to have met defeat in their attempt to make Ajax manager Martin Jol their new boss after the Dutch press reported he was going to stay in Amsterdam.
‘They were interested, but in principle I am staying with Ajax,’ the Telegraaf paper quotes Jol as saying.
Jol was known to be angry that Ajax’s board had refused to sanction any spending for the next season despite the departures of Dennis Rommedahl and Marko Pantelic. The club is in deep financial trouble.
The Telegraaf says that under a compromise deal, Mol will be allowed to bring in a cheap striker or right-winger. In addition if Gregory van der Wiel, Luis Sarez or Maarten Stekelenburg leave they will also be replaced.
The agreement still has to be approved by Ajax’s supervisory board, the paper says.
Ajax said on Monday Jol’s departure would ‘not be desirable’. The club is busy preparing for next week’s Champions League qualifier against PAOK of Greece.
According to the British press, Fulham had been prepared to buy out the 54-year-old’s two-year contract with Ajax.
Jol has been with Ajax for one year. Under his leadership, the Amsterdam side won the Dutch Cup and was one point off winning the league title.
