Fulham have completed the signing of Liverpool full back Neco Williams tonight, who joins on loan for the remainder of the season.
The Welsh international, who has made 23 senior appearances for the Reds, has moved to the Championship leaders to gain further first team experience. The 20 year-old is likely to go straight into Marco Silva’s first team with Kenny Tete an injury doubt for the FA Cup third round trip to Manchester City next week and Denis Odoi having joined Club Brugge on deadline day.
Williams, who helped Liverpool lift the Premier League title in 2020, has won seventeen senior caps for his country and played in every fixture as Robert Page’s side reached the second round of last summer’s European Championships. He has long been on Fulham’s radar and fits the attacking profile that Silva seeks from his full backs.
This is a terrific piece of business. A full international, experienced at the highest level, Neco can operate at right or left back and is a huge threat moving forward. He has the skills normally associated with a winger.
Definitely what we have been crying out for -a full back who goes forward rather than the backward passing of Tete and Odoi-both decent enough but just lacking that attacking quality.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Williams move over to the left when Tete is fit again.
I am sure that Harry Wilson will have had something to do with Neco choosing Fulham over other interested parties such as Bournemouth for one and I can’t wait to see the pair link up on the field.
